Sustainability is important for many reasons; climate change and environmental impact are important factors these days. We would like visitors to enjoy a visit to Orkney without worrying about your environmental impact. The list below outlines some of what we do to help with sustainability at Rerwick Cottage:
1) Solar water heater: The water to the cottage is heated by a solar panel mounted on the roof. This heats the domestic hot water, which is then topped up with an electric immersion heater.
2) Local produce: We use local produce where possible.
3) Recycling: segregated garbage is available to assist with waste recycling. There is also a ‘Green Cone’ compost unit located in the garden.
4) Tree Planting: Some trees have been planted nearby the cottage, and we plan to continue tree planting in the future. In the longer term these trees will help with counteract carbon emissions. They also will provide a habitat to help with local wildlife diversity.
